Bunkers with guns or radar have to be aligned to a known geografical position. As a fixed orientation point the magnetic north pole is used. To find that direction you need a compass. In this section we bring you the small field compasses as well as the special instruments for the surveyer and the operator of a radio directionfinder such as the HE-1.

Searching for German compasses you must look at the character for east. "O" stands for Ost, "E" stands for east.

A modern field compass. We use it on our trips to measure the line of fire of the inland batteries. Plotting the findings on the map tells you which beach or part of the coast was covered by that battery. Hold it horizontal, look over the white dots and read the angle in the mirror underneath.
