Stp Elizabeth

Built by Elizabeth I on an island off St Helier accessible by a causeway, and extended in the 17th and 18th centuries. It fell out of favour because troops garrisoned there could not get back to defend the town at high tide, so it was replaced by Fort Regent. Fort Elizabeth was a strategic position as it could lock off entrance to St Helier's Harbor. Some fortress standard bunkers were built and the buildings in the old fort were modified to serve as a garrison.
